Client Service Volunteers
Gilmore Client Services
… is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Depending on the department, volunteers arrive between 8:00-9:00 am and are typically finished by 12:00 or 1:00 pm. Volunteers should be comfortable working with diverse populations and typically work at least twice a month. Access our Gilmore Volunteer handbook.
Front Desk: These volunteers greet clients and register them for services. They also answer the phone and perform administrative duties. Must be comfortable using computers.
Screener: Screeners interview clients to determine their eligibility for assistance. They also facilitate arrangements for food and clothing services. Must be comfortable using computers.
Clothing: Clothing volunteers assist clients with clothing selections. They also sort and stock clothing items received from the Resale campus. Must be able to stand for periods of time.
Food: Pantry volunteers sort incoming food donations and stock the pantry shelves as well as packaging food for eligible clients. Must be able to stand for periods of time.
Transportation: Drivers utilize the Coalition van to transport clients and run errands as needed. Must have a valid NC driver’s license with no major infractions, be able to lift 40+ pounds and have no mobility issues.
Employment counselor: (services temporarily suspended) Counselors assist residents with resume writing, online job applications, and interview techniques. Must be comfortable using computers.
The location on West Pennsylvania Avenue in Southern Pines houses The Coalition Resale Shops and Donation Center. The shops are open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm Tuesday through Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Morning and afternoon shifts are available and volunteers typically work at least twice a month. Access our Resale Volunteer handbook.
Sorter: These volunteers sort and examine incoming donations as well as determining their final destination based on priority.
Thrift store clerk: Store clerks assist customers with purchases and operate the cash register in one of our four thrift stores.
Stock clerk: Stock clerks organize and restock merchandise according to priority in one of our four thrift stores.
Empty Bowls is a grass roots movement to help raise hunger awareness started in 1990 by the Imagine/RENDER group. Events feature a simple meal of soup as well as commemorative bowls to help attendees remember the empty bowls of those who go hungry each day.
