Services
For over thirty years
… Sandhills/Moore Coalition has worked to alleviate hunger and financial strains of struggling households in Moore County. The Coalition offers a wealth of services including food, clothing, and financial assistance as well as programs to assist families to become self-sufficient. The Gilmore Client Services Center is open to clients Monday-Friday by appointment by calling (910) 693-1600 and choosing option 5.
Each year the Coalition receives approximately 5,000 requests for assistance. Although circumstances vary, clients are typically working diligently to make it on their own but have experienced an unexpected situation leaving them unable to provide for their family. The Coalition is able to ensure these events don’t begin a downward spiral. In addition to immediate assistance, Coalition representatives also work to explore additional community resources that may be available for clients with on-going needs.
Emergency Assistance
Food
Although Moore County is often recognized for its beautiful golf courses and longleaf pines, many in our community suffer from food insecurity. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina reports that over 17% of their service population is food insecure and over 60% of school-aged children receive free or reduced school meals.
Sandhills/Moore Coalition provides a standard food package including perishable and nonperishable items to feed a family for up to seven days. Although many items are received through donation, each year the Coalition spends over $90,000 to purchase additional food items to provide food for over 6,500 residents.
Clothing
Seasons change in the Sandhills and children grow, seemingly overnight. The Coalition provides vouchers to shop at Miss Hallie’s and Cris & Florrie’s Boutique where seasonally appropriate clothing for adults and children may be obtained. Linens, including sheets, towels, and blankets can also be requested. Diapers are also available in size newborn through six.
Financial assistance
Life can be difficult. For many in our community, an unexpected illness or expense can lead to devastating consequences. Fortunately, when emergencies arise, the Coalition is there.
Thanks to generous community backing and sales at the Resale Shops, the Coalition offers limited financial assistance with life’s basic necessities. Available assistance includes electric, water, heating fuel, and rent. Each client meets with a trained volunteer or staff member who evaluates their circumstances and determines eligibility for assistance. The Coalition has pledge arrangements with most area vendors, and payments are made directly to the provider.
Resources & Referrals
In addition to direct assistance, the Coalition also maintains information on a wealth of other area services. Our Resource Guide offers information on non-profits and other area agencies that may benefit those we serve. We also maintain lists of available affordable housing and other local resources for
Each client’s circumstances are evaluated on a case by case basis, and available assistance may vary. Clients must be a resident of Moore County in order to qualify for any Coalition services.
Sustainability Programs
Sandhills/Moore Coalition’s vision is to lead the effort to achieve self-sustaining households for all in Moore County. In addition to crisis services, a variety of assistance is available to help residents to achieve continuity within their lives.
Employment Expenses
Residents who are employed or have recently obtained employment may request assistance with work-related expenses. Many employers require specific uniforms, shoes, or safety gear prior to starting work. With proof of employment, the Coalition may help obtain necessary items.
Mentoring (temporarily suspended)
Coalition mentors partner with clients to help them acquire the resources, skills, and behavioral changes to achieve self-sufficiency. Mentors help set priorities, develop action plans, and connect to resources to help achieve goals. Participation in the mentor program is by invitation.
Each client’s circumstances are evaluated on a case by case basis, and available assistance may vary. Clients must be a resident of Moore County in order to qualify for any Coalition services.
Special Distributions
Shoes for Students
In partnership with Moore County schools social workers, Shoe Carnival in Aberdeen, and several civic groups and foundations, each year the Coalition provides new athletic shoes for elementary school students in Moore County. Students are referred to the program by their school social worker and visit Shoe Carnival to be fitted for their new shoes.
Paint a bowl, fill a bowl for Empty Bowls
Empty Bowls is a grass roots movement to help raise hunger awareness started in 1990 by the Imagine/RENDER group. Events feature a simple meal of soup as well as commemorative bowls to help attendees remember the empty bowls of those who go hungry each day.
